Abstract

The form of graphite in cast iron is modified by blowing through that molten iron a stream of methane and/or carbon monoxide. The iron may be desulphurised before the gas treatment, and conventional nodularising agents such as cerium, didymium, thorium, yttrium, barium, magnesium, lithium, calcium, potassium or sodium in alloy, mineral or compound form may be added together with or subsequent to the gas stream. A graphitising agent may also be added.
