Abstract
1316438 Vermicular graphite cast iron BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 24 Nov 1970 [29 Nov 1969] 58450/69 Heading C7D A commercial iron containing 2À3-4À5%C, up to 6% Si, up to 0À6% P and up to 0À8% Mn, with possibly also 0-35% Ni, is desulphurized to less than 0À002%, treated to minimize the amount of graphite modifying elements (particularly alkali, alkaline earth or rare earth metals) and cast into moulds providing rapid solidification desulphurlzatton may be effected by the addition of calcium carbide while the bath is agitated by air or oxygen possibly introduced through a porous plug in the base of the ladle, which preferably has an acid or neutral lining. Excess desulphurizing agent is then oxidized and either by the air stream or by the addition of ferric oxide generally in a separate furnace; alternatively chlorine may be used. The bath is then inoculated with ferrosilicon low in graphite-modifying elements and may be cast in a metal or graphite mould.
