Abstract

Starch sizes for applying to paper and textile materials are preserved against attack by bacteria and fungi by the addition of an emulsion in water of a solution in a water insoluble solvent, e.g., a hydrocarbon or ketone, of a water insoluble phenol, preferably orthobenzylparachlorophenol.ALSO:A bacteriocidal composition comprises an oil-in-water emulsion of, in the oil phase, a water-insoluble phenol and a water-insoluble organic substance which dissolves or solubilizes the phenol, and in the water phase a major proportion of water, which composition is capable of dilution with water to a level of about 5 to 6 parts per million of its water-insoluble phenolic ingredient without impairing its bacteriostatic effectiveness. Specified phenols are orthobenzylparachlorophenol, 2,2-methyl-bis-(3,4,6-trichlorophenol), dihydroxydichlorodiphenyl-methane, 1-hydroxy, 3-methyl, 4-chlorobenzene; 2,4 - dichloro - 3,5 - dimethylphenol, orthophenylphenol. The water-insoluble organic substance is conveniently a water-insoluble organic solvent, e.g. xylol and mineral oil or di-isobutyl ketone in which the water-insoluble phenol is dissolved, and a dispersing agent, e.g. potassium lignin sulphonate for the solvent solution of the phenol may also be present. Preferably, the composition also includes an emulsion stabilizer, e.g. gum ghatti, gum arabic, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose. The development of odour in starch sizes used in paper making is eliminated by incorporating therein these bacteriostatic emulsions.
