Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide is added with stirring to a suspension of antimony trioxide in aqueous potassium hydroxide at an initial temperature not exceeding 35 DEG C. at such a rate that the mixture does not rise above 85 DEG C., whereby potassium pyroantimonate is formed. The potassium hydroxide is present in such amount in excess of that required by the formula, that the solubility of the pyroantimonate is depressed and it settles out in not more than 12 hours but not so rapidly as to coat the trioxide and stifle the reaction. This amount increases as the concentration of trioxide in the suspension decreases. Using 190 g. of the trioxide in 750 cc. of water a 25-100 per cent excess of potassium hydroxide may be used. The mixture may be heated up to 95 DEG C. after adding the hydroxide. In the example, a second batch of potassium pyroantimonate was obtained by adding further quantities of the reactants to the mother liquor from the first batch.
