Abstract
Anhydrous lithium peroxide is formed in a reaction mixture comprising an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and solid lithium hydroxide, the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide and the lithium hydroxide in the mixture being such as to give a weight ratio of water present in the mixture to lithium peroxide formed by the reaction of the hydrogen peroxide with the lithium hydroxide of from 2:1 to 5:1; the hydrogen peroxide and lithium hydroxide being allowed to react at the ambient temperature of the mixture. The lithium peroxide formed is dried. The hydrogen peroxide and lithium hydroxide are permitted to react until a change in colour is observed in the reaction mixture and/or until the temperature of the reaction mixture recedes to a temperature of 30 DEG to 40 DEG C. An organic liquid e.g. lower alkyl alcohols, pyridene or ketones which are water soluble but in which lithium peroxide is insoluble are added to the reaction mixture after the hydrogen peroxide and lithium hydroxide have been permitted to react.
