Class 9(1) An artillery cartridge case having a tubular portion 1 made by helically winding sheet-metal is protected against the entry of dampness by placing beneath the external metal layer a sheet 4 of flexible, compressible and impermeable material, preferably with the edge 5 of the sheet extending beyond the outer edge of the metal in the part fixed in the cartridge base 2. The sheet 4 may be paper or fabric suitably impregnated, e.g. with paraffin wax, or of synthetic plastic material. The sheet 4 may be in the form of a narrow band or of considerable width and is compressed between the metal layers when the tube is formed. A gasket 8 may be placed around the joint of the tube 1 and the base 2 as in Specification 800,147.
