Abstract

A detergent tablet comprises (a) 30-85 per cent, preferably 50-70 per cent, by weight of a sodium fatty-acyl-aminomethanesulphonate having 10-18 carbon atoms in the acyl group; (b) 5-40 per cent, preferably 10-20 per cent, of sodium or potassium soaps having 10-18 carbon atoms in the molecule; (c) 5-20 per cent, preferably 7-16 per cent, of a plasticizer such as a higher fatty amide, lanolin, stearin, petroleum jelly, higher alkyl phenols, such as p.-tert.-octyl-phenol, higher fatty alcohols and higher alkyl esters of phthalic acid, such as dioctyl phthalate; and (c) 5-15 per cent of water. The sodium fatty-acyl amino-methanesulphonate preferably contains acyl groups derived from mixtures of fatty acids such as the fatty acids of palm kernel or coconut oil, which may have been partly hardened or may have been mixed with minor proportions of fatty acids derived from such other oils or fats as palm oil or bone grease. The soaps to be used are of the conventional kind and may include minor proportions of rosin or soft oils such as groundnut oil. The preferred plasticizers are the fatty amides of 12-14 carbon atoms; such fatty amides are commonly already present to some extent in the fatty-acyl-aminomethane-sulphonate ("amide" also includes the corresponding methylene-bis-amide). The Provisional Specification also refers, in this respect, to the use of N-hydroxyalkyl amides such as N-monoethanolamides and N-monoisopropanolamides. Mixed plasticizers, such as lanolin and fatty amide, may be used, and the compositions, which may be produced by the usual process of milling and plodding the ingredients, may also incorporate opacifiers such as titanium dioxide, perfumes, and dyes, these latter ingredients being added at the milling stage. Specification 789,032, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
