Abstract

797,872. Discharge tubes: cathode materials. HURST, H. Dec. 30, 1955 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 28176/54. Class 39(1). Electricity is generated from a cell containing two or more electrodes by applying external heat to the cell, a current then flowing through an external circuit connecting the emissive and collector electrodes. In the Figure 1, is a thin collector plate, sandwiched between two emissive electrodes 2 coated internally with emissive material 3 consisting of barium and strontium oxides which may be held in an alumina framework. The electrodes 2 are connected by a strip 5, and spaced from electrode 1 by thin perforated ceramic plates 4. The cell envelope 7 is of heat-resistant material such as ceramic or silica. The electron flow between the electrodes may be modified by varying the shape or size of the electrodes, or by introducing a control grid. The emission may be increased by irradiation of the emissive electrode by radioactive material ; such material may be included within the tube envelope, or actually incorporated into the emissive layer. The cell may contain neon or argon, or metallic vapours such as sodium or mercury, in addition to barium. Assemblages of such cells may be made in series or parallel.
