Abstract
712,370. Electric discharge apparatus. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and COOK, K. G. June 10, 1953 [June 10, 1952], No. 14642/52. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XXXV] As shown, an electronic relay containing hydrogen within a sealed cylindrical glass envelope 1 has an anode formed by a molybdenum plate 3 attached to a nickel cup 4, a control grid formed by two staggered perforated metal plates 5 and 6 supported by a cup 7, and a cylindrical cathode 8 the end face 9 of which is coated with emissive oxide and within which is a heater 10. A cylindrical heat shield 11 is provided round the cathode. The discharge between unheated cylindrical nickel electrodes 16, 17 mounted in the exhaust tube 15 of envelope 1 is utilized (see Group XXXV) to control the energization of a heater 21 formed by a perforated copper-nickel tube which contains zirconium hydride, so that sufficient hydrogen is released to maintain constant pressure automatically. An insulated nickel tube 25 prevents the characteristics of the discharge between electrodes 16 and 17 from being affected by the formation on tube 15 of a film of metal sputtered from electrode 17, while a short nickel tube 26 connected to electrode 17 prevents extension of the discharge.
