Abstract
975,023. Electron beam apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 27, 1961 [Nov. 14, 1960], No. 34612/61. Heading H1D. An electron gun comprises an elongated tubular cathode 17 having one end closed and coated with electron - emissive material, a tubular shield 52 coaxially surrounding the cathode and secured to the other end of the cathode, and a control grid cup 18 coaxially surrounding the shield 52 with its open end extending towards the secured ends of the cathode and shield. The control grid 18 and cathodeshield assembly are independently supported from an elongated insulating element 16. As shown, the gun electrodes are supported from glass rods 16 by pairs of U-shaped metal elements 27-32, the cathode heater being supported by straps 34 also embedded in glass rods 16. The cathode is secured to shield 52 by a thin metal ring 56, and electrical connection to the cathode is made via support element 27, to minimize heatloss from the cathode. Shield 52 extends into the grid cup sufficiently far to prevent deposition on glass rods 16 of material evaporated from the cathode. The gun is supported between lead-ins 15 and spring fingers 35 and also includes a getter ring 36. During manufacture, grid cup 18 and shield 52 are secured to glass rods 16 before the cathode is mounted within shield 52, and the grid-cathode spacing is measured by a capacitance bridge technique.
