Abstract

794,623. Percussive drills. INTERNATIONAL DRILL CORPORATION (PROPRIETARY), Ltd. March 13, 1956 [March 15, 1955; Feb. 22, 1956], No. 7823/56. Class 124. A bit for a percussive drill has cutting inserts forming a chisel shaped cutting edge and means to move the inserts laterally to compensate for gauge loss. As shown, the bit may comprise a pair of inserts 12 slidable in a slot 11 in a drill head and having between them an inverted-V shaped space 25. A wedge 22 arranged in the drill head enters the space 25 between the inserts and is held in position by end 15 of a shank 16, a series of shims 19 between the head and the shank limiting the forward position of the wedge. The shims may be removed one at a time allowing the wedge to enter further into the space and force the inserts apart. Other methods of adjusting the gauge of the drill include inserting shims between the inserts and a central support on the head, Fig. 7 (not shown), mounting the inserts each on one base which bases may be moved apart by right and left hand threads on a screw, Fig. 8 (not shown), and providing the inserts and the slot in the head with corresponding corrugations, the inserts being removed from the head and replaced again in a position to restore the gauge, Fig. 10 (not shown).
