Abstract

794,301. Torsional-vibration dampers. CROSET, L. P. May 7, 1956, No. 14022/56. Class 108(3) In a viscous friction damper of the type comprising an annular slipping flywheel 11 enclosed within a casing 14 carried by a rotary shaft (not shown)., the casing 14 and/ or reservoir associated therewith, is constructed as a chamber of variable volume adapted to increase or decrease in size to conform with the thermal expansion or contraction of the damping liquid. As shown, the casing 14 comprises an annular chamber closed by an annulus 15. The hub of the casing 14 is formed with a circumferential series of cylindrical chambers 14b which alternate with a series of bores for connection of the damper to a flange of the rotary shaft. Each chamber 14b contains a metallic bellows 16 closed at its inner end 16a and open at its other end to atmosphere, and where it is soldered in the mouth of the chamber 14b. Each chamber 14b is connected with the interior of the casing 14 by a bore 14d. Vacuum de-aerated silicone oil completely fills the interior of the casing 14, the bores 14d and the chambers 14b. Changes in volume of the oil are accommodated by deflections of the bellow 16. The bellows 16 may be replaced by a piston displaceable under spring or merely atmospheric pressure.
