Abstract

<PICT:0793383/III/1> Incomplete combustion of methane or other gas, or atomized liquid fuel, in oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas to produce synthesis gas is initiated in a precombustion chamber 5 of a two-stroke or four-stroke I.C. engine. An ignition device 6 may be used and a small quantity of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas may be introduced into the chamber 5 via an auxiliary inlet valve during or shortly before or after the introduction of the fuel mixture into the engine cylinder. Combustion in the presence of steam and carbon dioxide is referred to.
