Abstract
A gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is produced by charging a hydrocarbon and a free-oxygen-containing gas into the cylinder of an internal combustion engine at 50-100 lbs./sq. in. gauge, further compressing and igniting the mixture and discharging the resultant products of partial combustion. A cooling purging medium, e.g. air, carbon dioxide, methane, or, preferably, steam under pressure, <PICT:0705514/III/1> <PICT:0705514/III/2> is injected through manifold 22 and valve 18 in cylinder head 15 into cylinder 10, having piston 11 attached to a crankshaft (not shown), working on a four stroke cycle, before the gases resulting from the previous cycle are completely discharged. Methane or natural gas and gas containing over 80 per cent. O2, in O : C atomic ratio of 1.05 : 1-1.5 : 1, are then injected through manifolds 23, 21 and valves 17, 19 respectively. The methane and oxygen may be premixed or separately and simultaneously or sequentially charged to the cylinder; preferably at least a part of the methane is injected before the oxygen is admitted. The mixture is compressed and ignited by spark plug 25 and the product gas is exhausted through valve 16 and manifold 20 at 40-100 lbs./sq. in. The valves 17, 18, 19 may be shrouded with annularly disposed projections 26, 27, 28 to ensure turbulent mixing. The methane and oxygen may be preheated to 300-600 DEG F. A minor proportion of the oxygen may be introduced in the immediate vicinity of the spark plug after compression of the mixture. The process may also be worked on a two stroke cycle.
