The ion collector in a mass spectrometer includes in order, a mounting plate 41, a plate 42 for suppressing secondary electrons, a plate 44 with an advance collector 51 extending across the slit providing for sensing of the signal arriving at the main collector, in order to attenuate large signals fed to a recorder of limited range, a plate 46 with a resolving slit of adjustable size, a shield plate 47, a plate 48 which may be a shield plate or at a high positive potential to collect metastable ions, a plate 49 which serves as a secondary electron suppressor or shield and the main collector 11. The plates are piled together with insulating spacers between them and the assembly screws are grounded by a part-ring 43. Plates 44 and 46 may be left floating to make it possible to collect adjacent isotopes and/or groups of isotopic peaks simultaneously. The ion source of Specification 792,042 is referred to.
