Abstract
774,602. Mass spectrometers. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 12, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 32907/54. Class 39(1). To compensate for the initial random positions and velocities of the ions in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, the ion extracting and accelerating field is varied with time e.g. increased linearly hyperbolically or parabolically. The amplitude of a voltage pulse applied to the backing electrode 22 may be increased, or a constant voltage pulse may be applied to the electrode 22 and a voltage pulse having a decreasing amplitude may be applied to the extracting electrode 24. The distance between the ion collector 36 and the electrode 24 is chosen, in accordance with Specification 728,172, to minimise errors resulting from the different positioning of the ions. The ions are generated in the space between electrodes 22, 24 by an electron stream passing from filament 10 to electrode 20 as described in Specification 713,993. The mass spectrometer may have a number of accelerating regions as described in Specification 727,683. Suitable electrode spacings are specified.
