Abstract

790,240. Making and opening bags. PNEUMATIC SCALE CORPORATION, Ltd. May 27, 1955, No. 15426/55. Classes 94(1) and 94(2). Apparatus for forming flat bags and passing them onto an expansible mandrel includes suction members engaging the bag sides to open them and elements cooperating with these members by entering the bag mouth and engaging the inner surface of the sides. The apparatus also includes means for forming a crease at the base of the longitudinal seam of the bag. The invention is applied to the machine described in Specification 717,732, the bag opening suction cups being replaced by vertically elongated blocks 38, one on each side of the bag, having a series of suction apertures 78 in rubber inserts 84. As the blocks 38 move apart fingers 94 pivot inwards and grip the bag sides against the inserts 84. The creasing means for the longitudinal seam consists of a wheel 118 cooperating with an angle piece 124 and sited between the seam forming and bag feeding rollers. The wheel is held against a stop 138 by a spring 134 and may be pivoted clear for initial insertion of the bag material.
