Abstract

789,049. Oil gas; purifying oil gas; material for making coke. BERGWERKSGES HIBERNIA AKT.-GES., and KOPPERS GES., H. March 20, 1956 [March 24, 1955], No. 8696/56. Class 55 (2). In a process for producing gases having a high olefine content by thermal conversion of hydrocarbon oils the hot conversion products are brought into contact with a moving mass of cold, wet coal to condense the liquid hydrocarbons contained therein. The coal employed may be a coking coal and the coal may be subsequently coked. In the Figure, cold, wet coking coal is fed from a hopper 1 to a container 3 having an agitating device 4, 5 and from which the coal is fed to a treatment chamber 7 where it is contacted with hot reaction products from a reaction chamber 17. The treated reaction products leave by a pipe 22 and the coal descends a tube 8 into a lower vessel 9 containing an agitating device 11 and finally into a receiving hopper 13. The tube 8 is movable so that the depth of the bed of coal through which the reaction products pass may be varied. The thermal conversion of the hydrocarbon oil is effected by injecting the oil in finely-divided form into a hot carrier gas produced in a burner 18 supplied with oil and oxygen. The carrier gas may have a temperature of 1500-1600‹ C. but if it is particularly desired to produce the temperature of the carrier gas is reduced to 850-1000‹ C. by the addition of a cold gas through a pipe 19.
