Abstract
A liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. bunker C oil, is coked in a zone 4 and part of the coke is transferred (via 5 . . . 7) to a gasification zone 3 where it is contacted by a gas containing free oxygen (e.g. air) at a temperature of 1700 DEG to <PICT:0998880/C4-C5/1> 2200 DEG F., the carbon/oxygen ratio of the feed to the zone 3 being controlled so that at least part of the coke is consumed, coke particles being supplied to the zone 3 at a rate to maintain a supply of coke therein. The zone 3 is preferably a fluidized bed, and the zone 4, to which an oxygen-containing gas may be delivered, may comprise a fluidized bed of coke introduced at 19. Preferred temperatures in the zone 3 are 1750 DEG to 2100 DEG F., and the pressure may be up to 40 p.s.i.g. The oil for the zone 4 and the air for zone 3 may be preheated, e.g. to 200 DEG to 650 DEG F. and 400 DEG to 1000 DEG F. respectively. The gaseous products, which mix in the space above the zones, are mainly hydrogen from zone 4 and CO from zone 3. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the zones are in separate vessels, and liquid hydrocarbon may be additionally delivered to the gasification zone, along with some or all of the gases from the coking zone, in order to control the H2/CO ratio in the final gas. The coke introduced at 19 may be activated or petroleum coke. Two detailed examples of the gasification step and details of the operating conditions (including C/O2 mole ratios of 0.5 to 1.5 in the feed), of the apparatus of Fig. 1, are given.
