Abstract

Colours are produced on metal surfaces succeptible to the action of sulphide ions by dipping in a solution containing free sulphide ions, withdrawing before the sulphide film which forms is thick enough to give a uniform colour effect, immediately arresting further action of the sulphide solution (e.g. by plunging into a large volume of cold water), and drying the washed surface. The film may be protected by applying a coating of transparent lacquer. Specifically disclosed is the colouring of leaves plated with copper or silver by dipping in a solution of liver of sulphur, plunging into cold water, and drying in a current of warm air. Iron surfaces may also be treated; ammonium hydrosulphide solutions are alternative sulphide solutions that may be used.
