Abstract

787,100. Clamp fastenings. SIHN, W. Oct. 31, 1955 [Nov. 10, 1954], No. 31017/55. Class 44 Apparatus for securing two opposing and co-linearly arranged rods 11, 12 to a mast 2 which lies substantially at right angles to said rods comprises a split collar clamp 3 for surrounding the mast which has an extension 4 divided by a gap 6, which provides said split, each division of the extension having a hole 5 therein, a bolt 9 for location in each hole and secured to a respective said rod at one end, a threaded member 17 for engaging the opposing ends of the bolts for drawing them together, said bolts each having a circumferential flange 13, 14 which on relative rotation of said bolts bears against the face 7, 8 of its hole in the extension whereby the gap is narrowed and the clamp thus secured to the mast. The threaded member is a stud which engages threaded bores 15, 16 in the bolts and each circumferential flange 13, 14 is shaped so that it can be rotated by a wrench. The rods 11, 12 are hollow and each bolt has a knurled portion 10 which engages inside the end of one of the rods. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the gap 6 is of wedge shape and each bolt engages its hole 5 with play to enable the rods to take-up their co-linear position. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 each division of the extension 4 is provided with a finger 18, 19 which loosely embrace a tubular rivet 20. The walls of the gap 6 are, in this construction, parallel initially and when the clamp is tightened to grip the mast the fingers grip the tubular rivet so that the walls of the gap are maintained parallel.
