785,658. Joint-making packing. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. Sept. 14, 1955, No. 26331/55. Class 122 (3). A gasket, particularly for the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine, comprises a sheet of compressible material 1 clamped between two thin metallic facings 2 perforated with relatively small holes 7. The compressible material is preferably asbestos treated with resinous organic binders, such as urea formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde or inorganic binders, such as Portland cement or sodium silicate, and the facings are of steel or copper. As an example, the holes 7 may be 1/1 of an inch in diameter and spaced ten to the inch in rows also spaced ten to the inch. The usual combustion openings 3, coolant openings 4 and bolt holes 6 are provided in the gasket and the facings may be held to the asbestos sheet either by a flange 8 surrounding the combustion opening as shown, or by grommets located in alternate bolt holes 6 on the longitudinal central line of the gasket.
