[Class 7 (ii)] A valve guide comprises an inner part E set in the cylinder head or block A, the valve stem c having liberal clearance in this part of the guide, and an outer part F free to expand laterally. The inner part E projects beyond the cylinder head &c. A forming a spigot e over which the outer part F fits tightly, but with a clearance G above the spigot e to form a " heat break." The outer part F, of bronze or other metal, having a higher coefficient of expansion than the valve stem, surrounds the stem closely and provides seatings for the valve springs D.
