Abstract
A lubricating oil composition suitable for use in steam turbines comprises a mineral lubricating oil containing an oxidation inhibitor and less than 5 per cent of turkey red oil. The turkey red oil may be used as such or as the sodium, potassium or ammonium salt. The oxidation inhibitor is a phenol, substituted phenol, e.g. alkylated cresol such as 2,4-di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol, amine or sulphur compound; sulphonated naphthenes, sulphates, sulphonic acids and derivatives thereof and certain sulphurized fatty oils, fatty acids or waxes, are excluded. Optional ingredients referred to are polyethylene glycol di-triricinoleate, a silicone antifoam agent, tributyl phosphate, isopropyl oleate and hexachlorocyclohexane. The base oil may be a solvent extracted distillate oil.
