Abstract

566,055. Lubricants. EVANS, E. A. Jan. 8, 1941, No. 273. [Class 91] A high - pressure lubricant comprises a lubricating oil with a minor proportion, up to 10 per cent, but usually below 2 per cent, of a quinone or quinone derivative. The quinone derivative should preferably have a high boiling point, a decomposition temperature below 130‹ C., and contain as substituents halogen, sulphur, nitrogen - containing groups and hydroxyl groups, and if not soluble in the lubricating oil a solvent such as cyclohexanol may be incorporated. Compounds mentioned include 2 6-dichlorquinone, trichlorquinone, chloranil, 2 : 5-dimethoxy-3 : 6-dichlor quinone, chloranilic acid, 3 : 6 - dicyan - 2 : 5 - dihydroxy quinone, tetrakis-ethyl-thioquinone, quinone chloroimine and quinone - dichloro - di - imine. Mixtures mentioned include dibenzyl-disulphide and chloranil, lorol thiocyanate and dichlorquinone, di - (3 - carbomethoxy - 4 - hydroxy - phenyl) thio ether and 2: 6-dichlorquinone. Examples refer to lubricating oils containing 0.5 per cent of quinone chloroimine and 0.5 per cent of 2 : 6-dichloroquinone respectively., Specifications 454,552, 486,942 and 488,590 are referred to.
