Abstract

A method of sterilizing and lubricating surgical and dental instruments comprises coating them with a film of an emulsion comprising a non-toxic, non-corrosive lubricant and water, and subjecting the coated instruments to a steam pressure atmosphere to convert the water phase of the emulsion to steam and leave the instruments coated with a film of lubricant. Conventional lubricants, for example petroleum oils, may be employed. Cutting oils, i.e. oil-water emulsions containing surface active agents, may be directly employed as emulsions according to the invention.
