Class 120(3) In a process for smoothing yarn consisting of or comprising thermoplastic fibres e.g. in admixture with non-thermoplastic fibres such as cotton and flax, by flattening protruding fibres, and heating sufficiently to set them in the flattened position, the yarn is passed continuously through a device which comprises a heated narrow passage e.g. a split, tapered tube having a wide funnel- or trumpet-shaped entrance and the wall(s) of which is heated as by means of an electric resistance wire or a gas flame, which flattens the fibres against the yarn: the effective diameter of the passage is not greater than twice the diameter of the yarn and its length is at least one half the average length of the fibres protruding from the. main body of the yarn. The yarn may be twisted as it travels through the passage, so that all its outer surface is in close proximity to the passage wall, and two successive grooves may be positioned one above and one below the yarn to ensure complete flattening of the fibres. The smoothed yarn may be sized before winding- to prevent ruffling of flattened ends. If a sheet of yarns, as on a warping beam, is to be smoothed, the yarns are passed through a device containing a number of single passages or one narrow slot as may be formed by two plates, one at least of which is heated, in which case a rotary movement is imparted to the yarn: alternatively, bars or rolls form the passages.The treated yarn may be doubled with similar or other yarns.
