Abstract
782,733. Journal bearings. SEETRU Ltd., [formerly SEETRU PRODUCTS, Ltd.]. Sept. 11, 1952 [Sept. 17, 1951], No. 22837/52. Class 12 (1). A railway vehicle axle bearing is provided with an upper shell 3, and a journal 2 free to move axially, each of which parts are formed with at least four equal cones axially displaced and paired in mirror relationship one to the other. In smooth operation the journal 2 occupies a central position so that its running surfaces form a perfectly mating fit with the surfaces of the shell. When the journal is displaced axially as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 3, the cones 13, 15 are completely relieved of load which is taken by cones 14, 16. In this position, however, the shell 3 is lifted and rests upon the journal only along the edges of the conical running surface as shown in Fig. 3, providing crescent-shaped oil pads 17 which constantly change in cross-section according to the axial movement of the journal, the pads being reduced to the normal thickness of the oil film when the journal is centrally mounted.
