Abstract

The invention comprises the N-methylol derivatives of aliphatic amino-dicarboxylic acids and their salts, which are prepared by reacting the amino-acid with formaldehyde under alkaline conditions. Use of excess of alkali metal hydroxide leads to the alkali metal salts of the products, from which alkaline earth metal salts are obtained by double decomposition. The free acids can be prepared from their salts by treatment with a proton-donating substance such as an acid or a cation-exchange resin of the carboxylic type, evaporation of the resulting solution in vacuo and precipitation with a water-miscible organic solvent such as alcohol or acetone. The alkaline earth metal salts are precipitated from aqueous solution by addition of a water-miscible organic solvent. The alkali metal salts are obtained by evaporation of their solutions in vacuo. Examples show the preparation of N-methylol-aspartic acid, N-methylol-glutamic acid and their di-sodium and di-calcium salts. The products have bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties.
