Abstract

775,314. Respirators &c. NORMALAIR, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1955 [Oct. 25, 1954], No. 30640/54. Class 81(2) Breathing apparatus for use in noxious atmospheres or under water or for administering anaesthetics comprises a metal or synthetic plastic casing b having a gag - type mouthpiece a and a connection o to a cylinder of compressed air or oxygen &c., the admission of which to the casing is controlled by a tilt valve j having a stem operated by a rubber disc g mounted on a snap-action diaphragm f carrying an exhalation valve m. The stem of the valve j passes through an aperture q in a perforate baffle p against which the rim of the diaphragm is held by a spring s. The casing has a cover having an aperture e through which a finger may be inserted to open the valve j. In normal operation, inhalation results in a lowering of the pressure in the casing so that the diaphragm moves to the left under the ambient pressure and effects opening of the valve j. Upon exhalation, the pressure in the casing rises thus snapping the diaphragm over to the right, the valve being closed by the pressure in the air cylinder.
