[Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] In a closed-path respiratory apparatus, comprising a regeneration and oxygen cylinder, and a flexible pipe connecting the regenerator to a mask, the pipe comprises two parts 35, 36, Fig. 5, each containing a valve opened when the parts are coupled together, and a purifying canister c, Fig. 2 is provided, to a pipe 55 leading from which the pipe 36, connected to the mask, may be coupled to form apparatus drawing in and purifying air from the atmosphere. The pipes 35, 36, Fig. 5 have spigoted into them flanged cylindrical coupling members 45, 38, the latter containing a valve disc 41 slidable on a rod 42 and biased to close by a spring 44, and the former containing a cage member 47 extending within and beyond it and apertured at 48 and 49 slidable within cage 47 is a spring-pressed cylindrical valve 50 having an extension 51. The valve 50 normally rests against the inturned edge 53 of cage 47 and closes apertures 49 but, on coupling the parts, rod 42 depresses valve 50 and cage 47 valve 41 permitting free passage of air. A coupling similar to 45 may be provided on pipe 55 Fig. 2. The canister c has an inhaling valve 70 and is coupled to a pipe 71 carrying a Y piece 72 the limbs of which are connected respectively to pipe 55 and to a pipe 73 carrying a disc exhaling valve 76 and also a flutter valve 78. The canister and exhaling valves are enclosed in a casing 65 carried on the belt of the wearer and having apertures 69, 67 for admission of air and protrusion of pipe 55 respectively. The regenerator comprises a casing carried with the oxygen cylinder slung beneath it, by straps on the back, the pipe 35 being connected to the top cover of the casing and extend over the user's shoulder.
