Abstract
774,786. Mortar projectile. BLACKER, L. V. S. June 18, 1951 [March 16, 1950], No. 6659/50. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A projectile which is discharged from a barrelled weapon by an explosive charge, is provided with a gas check behind the tail which is joined to the head by a tube, a strut within the tube transmits the thrust from the gas check to the head, and a secondary explosive charge within the tube for jettisoning the gas check and the strut device during flight. In Fig. 1, a projectile carries a primary charge 12 in the body 14 which carries the gas check 20 behind the tail drum 8. On igniting the charge 12 the thrust is transmitted by the strut 24 to the head, and also the firing pin 34 is driven forward into an igniter to set off the secondary charge 25. The pressure generated blows the cover 22 out of the tube 10, thus jettisoning the gas check 20 and the strut 24. In a modification a cartridge case may be screwed on to the gas check, while the member carrying the gas check is elongated into a spigot to extend into the tube connecting the head and tail. Between a firing pin on the end of the spigot and the secondary charge within the strut, there are inserted an igniter and a delay device. Specifications 662,429 and 772,651 are referred to.
