Abstract

1,179,804. llluminating projectiles. ISRAEL, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. 11 July, 1968 [30 July, 1967], No.33187/68. Heading F3A. An illuminating projectile particularly in the form of a mortar bomb or a bomb adapted to be dropped from an aircraft, comprising front and rear body portions 2 and 3 secured together by shearable rivets 8; an illuminant assembly 9 connected via a flexible cable 22 to a main parachute 25 and via a flexible cable 30 to an auxiliary parachute 29, the main parachute being releasably contained in a flexible casing 26 connected via a flexible line 28 to a disc 28a secured in the rear body portion; a rocket motor 17 having rearwardly directed orifices 19, and connected to the base 12a of the illuminant assembly by a rod 15; and an expelling charge (not shown) located in the nose of the body. The illuminant 10 and an ignition charge 13 are contained in an inhibitive envelope 11 in a container 12. In use, the expelling charge is ignited at a preset time after launching the projectile and as a result the rivets 8 are sheared, and the illuminant assembly still coupled to the rear body portion is expelled from the front body portion, which continues along its initial trajectory. At the same time the rocket motor is ignited and draws the illuminant assembly and the parachutes away from the rear body portion. Simultaneously, the auxiliary parachute opens, retarding the illuminant assembly and diverting it from the trajectory of the rear body portion. When the rear body portion and the illuminant assembly are adequately spaced apart, strain on the flexible line 28 pulls the casing 26 off the main parachute, and the illuminant assembly falls under the main parachute. The auxiliary parachute is burnt by the heat from the illuminant assembly.
