Abstract
774,422. Machines for distributing road materials. METCALFE, F. J. Sept, 27, 1955 [Oct. 4, 1954], No. 28503/54. Class 6(1). Spreading apparatus for stone chippings comprises a feed drum 8 having spaced parallel rods or bars 9 on its periphery and mounted adjacent to the elongated outlet of a hopper 1. As shown, the hopper is attached to the rear of a tipping truck 2 and the drum is arranged so that chippings are carried over the drum in an arcuate path. The floor 5 of the hopper is provided with a flexible strip adjacent to the drum and an adjustable flexible flap 15 is provided to control the feed of material over the drum. An aligned row of withdrawable plates 17 are provided in the hopper so that delivery of chippings to parts of the roller may be cut off. The roller is driven through chain and sprocket gearing 24 from the rear wheel of the truck which is propelled rearwardly. Movable division members 27 are provided in the truck so that only a part of the load is used at a time by tipping the truck. In a modification the drum may be provided with its own power unit carried by the hopper unit or the vehicle. In a further modification the hopper and drum may be. mounted on road wheels and may be selfpropelled or towed or pushed by a vehicle. Loads of chippings may be tipped into the hopper or delivered by a conveyer.
