Abstract
719,758. Road surfacing machines. PEDERSEN, M. M. Oct. 31, 1952 [Nov. 3, 1951], No. 27491/52. Class 107 A road surfacing machine comprises in combination, a container for surfacing material mounted on a vehicle, a transversely extending hopper extending over the entire operative width of the machine and a power-driven roller placed immediattely behind, and projecting partly into, the hopper so as to compress and smooth the material on the road. It is characterized in that the hopper and the roller are located at the front end of the vehicle and the vehicle and container being supported on supporting and driving components disposed behind said power driven roller. In Fig. 1 the machine consists of a chassis 1 carrying a container 3 with a hopper 4 in which is mounted a distributer 5. Roller 7 projects partially into the hopper being driven by the engine 2. The hopper is filled through a rear opening 10. Rollers 6 support and propel the machine and the edges of the rollers overlap to avoid forming track marks. Steerable front wheels 27 are provided. A modified supporting and driving device is shown in Fig. 4 where a set of foot plates. 12 (only one shown) are each pivoted on tappets 19, 20 by legs 21, 22 in turn pivoted to the upstanding portion 13 which carries stops 14, 15. An axle 11 carries a cam 18 so shaped as to engage at all times both rollers 23, 24 rotatable on legs 21, 22 respectively. A portion 16 of the circumference of axle 11 is reduced and the portions appertaining to each footplate of the set are staggered. When the full circumference of the axle is in the bottom position it bears on the part 13 which thus carries the weight of the machine. Other foot-plates being free from this full circumference are moved by the cam 18 in a forward direction and when fully forward the axle 11 bears on part 13 thus transferring the weight of the machine to this foot-plate. Further movement causes the axle 11 to roll over part 13 (under the action of the cam 18 on rollers 23, 24) and thus the machine is moved forward.
