Abstract

773,829. Vehicle wheels. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 7, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 587/55. Class 144 (1). A dual-wheel assembly, particularly for aircraft, comprises two tyre-carrying rim members 32 having axial flanges 34 which are connected together to provide between the rim members a seating for the inner race 22 of an annular bearing assembly which has a diameter substantially the same as the rim members. As shown, the bearing assembly is carried within an annular vertically supported bearing housing 12 welded to the lower end of an undercarriage member 10, and comprises a double thrust taper roller bearing 18, 20 clamped in the housing by a nut 16. The inner race 22 of the bearing is clamped between shoulders 36 formed on the flanges 34, which flanges are connected together to lock the wheel rims with the bearing race 22, either by axially extending bolts 38, or by an annular flanged sleeve and nut assembly 40 fitting within the inner periphery of the flanges 34 and acting in conjunction with axially extending locating dowels 42. The rim members 32 may be of the split type comprising either two rim sections connected by tie bolts 44, or a removable side flange 46 retained on the rim base 32 by a split ring 48. In an alternative arrangement each wheel may comprise two rim sections connected together by tie bolts which extend completely through both sections and screw into the axially inner section of the other wheel to lock the two wheels together with the inner bearing race.
