In leather rolling machines wherein a carriage carrying a depending roller 14 is mounted on a crosshead 5 and can be moved transversely (by means of screw 1) over a workpiece on a bed 31, the roller is mounted on a central shaft 29 which is in turn mounted in bearings 27 eccentric to the axis of said shaft and means 32-39 are provided to adjust the shaft angularly in said bearings and thereby adjust the distance between the roller and the bed. In the embodiment illustrated by Figs. 1 and 3, to which the above. numerals relate, the roller 14 is mounted on carrier bars 13 supported by the forked legs 12 of a front yoke 2 and a similar rear yoke. As shown in Fig. 3, the axle 29 of the roller has eccentric stub ends 28. The angular position of said stub ends in the bearings 27 is altered by means of tommy bar 39 and set in position by means of a locking pin 37 which passes through locking plate 32 into an aperture 38. Details of the suspension of the carriage and the manner of applying pressure to the roller through springs in housing 22 and hydraulic means in said housing 22 or adjusting worm 19 are illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown), and it is also staged that instead of being fixed at one end, each of the arms 13 may be provided with a flat lower surface abutting against a rotatable eccentric cain on the lower end of the adjacent leg 12, whereby the arm can swing to a small extent about the opposite leg to accommodate a thick workpiece.
