Abstract

772,224. Hydraulic packing. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. Oct. 25, 1955, No. 30461/55. Addition to 618,970. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In an hydraulic packing the header ring 1 is axially urged to press the lips 3 of a U-section sealing ring 2 apart by a number of coil springs 14 each mounted on a headed pin 12 and compressed between the head 13 of the pin and an annular spring pad 15 tightly fitted in the counterbore 11 of a hole 10 in the header ring, the shank of the pin being slidable in the pad and in the hole 10 and having an enlargement 16 on its end to prevent it passing through the pad 15 when the packing is removed from the gland 4. The enlargement 16 is formed after the pad 15 is mounted on the shank either by peening or by pinching in opposite sides of the shank end. The spring pad 15 may be a dished annular washer, as shown in Fig. 2, having an outer diameter slightly greater than the counterbore 11 or a ferrule 17, Fig. 5, with or without an outer locating flange 18.
