Abstract
769,391. Motor vehicle axles. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. May 23, 1955 [July 12, 1954], No. 14797/55. Class 79(4). [Also in Group XXXII] A front axle assembly for a tractor comprises a pair of axle sections 1, 2 mounted to extend laterally from, and to swing upwards and downwards about, a common centrally disposed longitudinally extending pivot 3 under the influence of spring means 4 normally resiliently supporting the load on the axle assembly and means for optionally locking the pair of axle sections against relative movement so that the pair of axle sections together form a rigid axle structure capable of swinging about the pivot 3. As shown, the spring 4 is also pivotally mounted on the pivot 3 and each axle section is formed with an extension 1b or 2b, one or both of which is or are adapted to receive a threaded portion 9 or 12 of a bolt 7 or 8 respectively, a free end 11 or 13 of the bolt being engaged in a hole in the other axle section. The extensions 1b and 2b are provided with lugs 5 and 6 respectively to form stops limiting the springing movements of the axle sections 1 and 2. The spring 4 may be replaced by coil springs for each axle section.
