Abstract
769,234. Reamers. MERZ AKT.-GES. Jan. 31, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954; Nov. 30, 1954], No. 2875/55. Class 83 (3). An expanding-reamer comprises a sleeve-like body 1a supporting the blades 4 and having longitudinal slits 2 which do not extend to the end of the body, and means 10 for expanding the body through engagement with it in an endzone of the blades. Conical expanding-surfaces 11, 12 of the same or different slopes may be provided on the plug 10 for each end of the axial or helical blades 4, and are assisted in their action by recesses 8, and preferably also by bores 15 which weaken the body. The body may be a separate component secured on the Morse-taper shank 1 by the expanding plug. Holes 30, Fig. 3, may be provided substantially beneath or between the blades to weaken the unslit part 5 of the body, and the slits arranged beneath or between the blades 4. Instead of holes 30, or in addition to them, radial or axial notches (not shown) may weaken the part 5. In Fig. 4, the body is additionally weakened between the ends of the blades, which may be tipped with carbide &c., and the unslit part 26 of the body.
