Abstract

A mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen is produced by passing ammonia over a catalyst comprising metallic nickel supported on alpha-alumina, the proportion of nickel being 2-20, preferably 6-8, per cent, and the catalyst being indirectly heated to a temperature of 750 to 1000 DEG C. or higher, preferably 800-900 DEG C. The catalyst may be prepared by converting hydrated or anhydrous alumina, e.g. boehmite, in pellets of 3/16 -\ba3/8 in. diameter, to alpha-alumina, impregnating with nickel nitrate, calcining to decompose the nickel nitrate to oxide and reducing to metallic nickel. The reduction may be carried out in situ by the passage of hydrogen or ammonia. The catalyst chamber may be of a nickel-chromium-iron alloy. The catalyst may be indirectly heated by means of an electric heater.
