Abstract
In the production of hydrogen cyanide by interacting ammonia, a gaseous hydrocarbon and oxygen in the presence of a platinum metal catalyst at a temperature of 750-1,250 DEG C., the reaction is initiated by electrically heating a starting coil of a platinum metal to a red heat in close proximity to the platinum metal catalyst. The gaseous hydrocarbon may contain 80 per cent. by volume. The molar ratio of oxygen to methane may be 1 : 1. Specification 723,508 is referred to.
