Abstract

Oxygen is removed from gas mixtures containing carbon monoxide by reacting the oxygen with hydrogen, provided in stoichiometric excess, in the presence of a metallic copper catalyst supported on a carrier. A catalyst containing 10% copper, based on the weight of the silica gel carrier, may be prepared by impregnating dried silica gel with an aqueous copper nitrate solution, drying for 2-3 hours at 100-120 DEG C. and firing at 400 DEG C. until the evolution of nitrogen oxides ceases followed by reduction at 200-250 DEG C. for 4-8 hours with hydrogen or with the gas mixture to be treated. The oxygen removal process may be carried out at 150-220 DEG C. with a pressure of 100-300 atm. using a space velocity of 1000-6000 by volume per hour or at 190-250 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure using a space velocity of 1000-3000. The removal of oxygen from carbon monoxide/hydrogen mixtures is exemplified and compared with the removal of oxygen from otherwise pure hydrogen containing 0.2% by volume of oxygen using the same catalyst.
