Abstract
A mixture of nitrogen and noble gases in which free oxygen is absent is produced from air by adding air to a mixture of nitrogen and noble gases in which free oxygen is absent, in a proportion of less than 1 part of air to 10 parts of said mixture, adding sufficient hydrogen to the mixture so formed to react with all the oxygen present in the added air, passing the mixture so formed over a catalyst for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to form water, separating a minor proportion of the mixture of nitrogen and noble gases in which free oxygen is absent so formed, and recycling the remainder of said mixture for the addition of further air thereto. The catalyst may be copper or a platinum metal, on a suitable carrier, and the water formed may be completely removed, e.g. by condensation, or partially removed to give a gas mixture of defined water content by passing the mixture over a drying agent, many of which are specified. If desired a stoichiometric excess of hydrogen may be added so that the final gas mixture contains hydrogen. To start the process any inert gas mixture may be used to dilute the air, since nitrogen and noble gas mixtures may not be available.
