Abstract

1326222 Separating gas mixtures GAF CORP 2 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969] 47023/70 Heading B1L Sulphur dioxide present in wet or dry gaseous mixture is separated therefrom by countercurrent contact of the mixture with a solvent which is an N-alkylated or N-cycloalkylated lactam, e.g. a pyrrolidone or piperidone of which many are exemplified, and subsequently stripping the sulphur dioxide from the solvent. The gaseous mixture may be one resulting from the combustion of fuels with a high sulphur content. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 40-60‹C and the solvent may be in admixture with a minor proportion of water.
