Abstract

767,953. Vehicle wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Sept. 3, 1954 [Aug. 31, 1953], No. 24888/53. Divided out of 734,856. Class 144 (2). A detachable rim 1 has secured thereto a plurality of equi-spaced cylindrical distance pieces 7 which extend radially inwardly from the wheel rim in alignment with open-ended axial slots 9 in a flange 5 of the wheel disc and are provided with securing means 3, 11 for engaging releasably with the flange 5. Fig. 1 shows the rim 1 secured to the disc 4 by domedheaded bolts 3 having captive nuts 11 which have a coned end to engage complementary holes in the flange 5 at the end of the slot 9, the other end of the slot 9 opening into an aperture 8 in the wheel disc to permit axial withdrawal of the rim 1 and the bolts 3 when the nuts 11 are loosened. The nuts 11 may have helical teeth 13, Fig. 4, on their outer peripheries for engagement by a worm 17 adjacent the end of a wheel brace 16 the extreme end 18 of which can be journalled in either of two holes 15 in a bracket 14 secured to the underside of the wheel disc flange 5. In a further arrangement, the wheel disc may be shaped to provide an axially outwardly directed flange 5 the slots 9. in which open at the axially outer edge thereof. Figs. 5 and 6 show an arrangement wherein the bolts 3 are replaced by domed-headed pins 19 each having a member 23 slidable thereon and enclosing therewith two annular pistons 24, 25. The piston 25 is held against axial displacement by a distance piece 27 secured on the pin 19 by a cap nut 28, and the piston 24 bears against a radial flange 26 on the inner periphery of the member 23, a return spring 32 which surrounds the pin 19 bearing at one end on the other side of the flange 26 and at its other end against a shoulder 22 on the pin 19. In operation, hydraulic fluid is forced between the two pistons 24, 25 via passages 29, 30 and 31 in the pin 19, by a master cylinder 33, Fig. 6, on the wheel rim 1, to cause piston 24 to move the member 23, against the spring 32, into engagement with the wheel-disc flange 5. The master cylinder 33 houses a spring-loaded non-rotatable piston 34 which is operable by rotation of a square-headed screw member 37 which engages in an internally screw-threaded end of the piston 34.
