In a fork truck the lifting carriage 14 is moved along the upper telescoping guides 10 by a cable 17 which is anchored to the truck frame and carriage at 18, 19 respectively, and passes over a pulley 16 journalled on the guides 10; whilst these guides are movable along the fixed guides 12 by a cable 23 which is anchored to the truck frame and guides 10 at 24, 25, respectively, and passes over a pulley 22 adapted to be raised and lowered by a ram 20.
