762,699. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 12, 1955 [April 29, 1954], No. 12405/54. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus in which the phase difference between a recorded constant reference frequency and a recorded frequency of similar value varying in phase with the reference frequency in accordance with the signal, the effect of spurious phase shifts, such as would be caused by misalignment of the transducers, is reduced by duplicating either the track containing the reference frequency or the track carrying the modulated frequency, and arranging the duplicated track symmetrically about the other. Fig. 2 shows duplicated modulated tracks I arranged either side of a central reference frequency track R, while the converse is shown in Fig. 3. If during recording and reproducing there is an angular variation 6 from the normal relationship of the transducers to the record strip, phase shifts of opposite sign will occur in the outer transducers and will be cancelled out. The strip could carry more than one pair of signal tracks disposed symmetrically about a central reference track as shown in Fig. 4.
