Abstract
A chromium plated metal article in which the chromium plating is cathodic in a sodium chloride solution to the foundation metal is rendered corrosion-resistant by immersion in an aqueous solution containing hexavalent chromium until a coating is formed which is anodic to the foundation metal. Preferably the article is removed from the treating bath prior to formation of a visible coating, the bath containing 0.1 to 150 gms./litre of hexavalent chromium and having a pH of 2.5 to 7 and treatment being effected at between 70 and 212 DEG F. for at least 30 minutes. The articles treated may be steel plated with chromium, or with copper or nickel followed by chromium, or successively with copper, nickel, and chromium. Suitable hexavalent chromium compounds are chromic acid and the dichromates of sodium, potassium, ammonium, copper, calcium, zinc, and nickel. Typically the treating bath contains 50 gms./litre sodium dichromate and has a pH of 4.5, the article p treated being immersed in it for 2 hours at 190 to 212 DEG F.
