Abstract
A tough protective coating is cathodically deposited on a metal base, e.g. of steel, zinc-electroplated steel, or aluminium sheet, from an aqueous solution of pH<1.5 containing a hexavalent chromium compound and a halogen oxyacid or a salt thereof. The halogen oxyacid or salt which may be present in an amount of 1 to 200 g/l is typically perchloric acid, sodium perchlorate, potassium chlorate, or sodium or potassium bromate, while the hexavalent chromium compound which may be in a concentration of 10 to 300 g/l is typically chromic acid but may be a soluble chromate or dichromate together with sufficient perchloric or nitric acid to obtain the necessary pH. Bath temperatures may be from 10 to 90 DEG C with cathode current densities up to 20 A/sq.dm. and treatment times of not more than 1 second. The colour of the coating varies with its thickness, endures working without peeling and accepts paint, for which purpose a coating thickness corresponding to 2 to 3 mg/sq.dm. is sufficient. Before coating the metal is degreased and if rust is present it is pickled, and after coating it is subjected to an alkali dip in dilute sodium hydroxide or ammonia solution.
